Ahead of tonight’s trip to Cambridge United the Scot has picked his players up, following Saturday’s frustrating draw with Accrington Stanley, with the power of positive thinking.

He has told his squad to focus on the fact they have lost only twice in their last 20 games - and not their win-less February.

At yesterday’s pre-match press conference he also dismissed any suggestion that the League Two leaders have become complacent.

“I don’t think it’s complacency,” said Ferguson. “What it is, I think, is probably human nature.

“In any walk of life - not just football but in industry and business for example - they get to a level where they are so high and then eventually the plateau has to come where it’s a bit of a straight line.

“It’s now where you go from the straight line, whether you go back up or whether you go down.

“Obviously we want to go back up and we’re confident we can do that.

“But to continue up there [points up] would have been a massive ask.

“I think up to this point we’ve done brilliantly,” he added.

“There’s two different ways of looking at it, and only one way for us to look at it. You can either look at it and say ‘you haven’t won in five’ or you can look at it and say ‘you’ve only lost two in 20 and we’re still at the top of the league’.

“A lot of teams have dropped points and the gap [to fourth] hasn’t got any shorter.

“What we’ve got to do now is go there [points up] again for the last 13 games. It’s as simple as that.”

Ferguson has no new injury worries.

French defender Mathieu Baudry could earn a recall after starting the Accrington game on the bench.
