What a performance on Saturday against a solid Wigan Athletic team, I was delighted with what I saw.
Rovers were brilliant to watch, they certainly deserved the scoreline and all three points.
Picking out a man of the match was no easy task though, I must admit.
I thought Rovers set the tone right from the first whistle.
There was a move from James Coppinger early on in the game when he picked up the ball and went on a run, it was a great bit of play. From that point, I just knew we were in for a strong performance.
When Coppinger’s on form, Rovers just tick. He’s a super player and was the trigger for Rovers to go on and perform like they did.
They closed everything down, were physical and didn’t give Wigan any time on the ball. They created plenty of chances and were well worthy of a 3-0 win.
I thought James Husband was also fantastic at left back, Gabriel Tamas on his Rovers debut at right back was superb too and the link-up play between Paul Keegan and Richie Wellens was brilliant, they were different class.
Keegan does an excellent job for Rovers. I think a lot of people underestimate just how important a player he is. He breaks up the player which allows Richie to roam and pick out those defence-splitting passes.
I’m also delighted for Chris Brown. Nobody deserved the two goals more than he does. It’s a bit of a thankless task playing up there on your own and I think, towards the end of the game, there were signs that he was still carrying an injury.
For that reason, I do think Rovers need another striker just to help Browny out. He’s doing everything up front but he can’t keep doing it on his own all of the time.
I think the manager Paul Dickov has done an excellent job so far, I don’t think people give him enough credit for what he has had to deal with.
He’s handled the team brilliantly through a really difficult period with injuries and I think Saturday proved that when you get your players back, you start to see the kind of performance that Rovers are capable of.
They’re good enough to stay up for me, I’ve always believed that. They just need to kick on from here.
There will be a real buzz about the club and at the training ground this week and I think they’re coming up against Blackpool at a really good time because they’re experiencing a few difficulties.
I can’t see Rovers coming away with anything less than a point this weekend.
