THE jury is still out on several prospective new signings after Rovers went on trial at local league side Armthorpe Welfare.

Sean O’Driscoll will spend the next few days deciding which of the ten trialists involved in last night’s tame pre-season opener he will take to next week’s training camp in Eskdale.

Towering Algerian defender Rachid Bouhenna certainly did himself no harm with a composed first half performance against the Northern Counties East League side - before O’Driscoll opted to change his entire outfield line-up after the break.

QPR striker Rowan Vine also showed glimpses of the quality that tempted Birmingham into paying £3million for his services four years ago and came close to finding the net on several occasions, only to be denied brilliantly by Welfare stopper Jamie Green.

Bouhenna, left back Ellis Deeney, striker Terry Dixon and central midfielder Alex Dyer, who played for Wealdstone last season, were given first half run outs in the testimonial match for Armthorpe boss Des Bennett.

Vine, Neal Trotman, Martin Devaney, Luke Summerfield, Kevin McDonald and an as yet unidentified centre half then got their chance in a slightly disjointed second half showing.

Rovers, who returned to training on Monday, hardly got going on a night ruined by torrential rain.

And the conditions had a huge part to play for Rovers’ goal when Devaney’s speculative 40-yard shot with just three minutes left on the clock slipped through the hands of the otherwise impressive Green.

Armthorpe, however, went straight down the other end and grabbed an equaliser when Neil Sullivan could only deflect Sam Colbear’s effort straight into the path of Lee Pearson, who was left with the simplest of finishes.

Dunscroft teenager James Baxendale impressed in his first appearance in a Rovers shirt since joining from Leeds, showing a willingness to run at defenders, while Sam Hird started at right back after agreeing a new one-year deal this week.

Rovers first half: (4-4-2) Sullivan, Hird, Deeney, Bouhenna, Friend, Gillett, Dyer, Coppinger, Baxendale, Hayter, Dixon.

Rovers second half: (3-5-2) Sullivan, Spurr, Trialist, Trotman, Devaney, Oster, McDonald, Summerfield, Fairhurst, Vine, Bennett.
