BATTLING Doncaster Rovers Belles just lacked a killer instinct as they were edged out by Bristol in their opening FAWSL Continental Cup game.

Bristol's Nikki Watts scored the only goal of a game of few chances when she cut in from the left and unleashed an unstoppable half volley from the angle of the box.

Aine O'Gorman looked dangerous throughout for Doncaster and went closest for the hosts when she struck the post with the game still goalless.

Both sides had cancelled each other out during a pedestrian first half, although Irish livewire O'Gorman tested Bristol goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain from distance.

Mary Earps was at full stretch to keep out Jemma Rose's long range free kick, while Jess Ashlock went closest to breaking the deadlock when her well struck effort from the edge of the box rattled the crossbar.

Belles looked dangerous on the counter attack after the break and rattled the post through O'Gorman after good work from Jess Sigsworth.

But Bristol snatched victory with a moment of quality from substitute Watts in the 75th minute when her rasping effort left Earps with no chance.
