Goalscorer Sue Smith hailed Belles’ emphatic victory over top flight opposition Manchester City as their ‘best performance of the season’.
Smith volleyed home a Jess Sigsworth cross in the 55th minute, adding to Beth England’s first half penalty, as Doncaster battled superbly for the 2-1 win in the Continental Cup.
Toni Duggan’s stoppage time sucker punch was not enough for the FAWSL1 outfit - the side who effectively replaced the Belles following last year’s controversial FA application process.
Smith said: “We’re so pleased because it was probably our best performance of the season.
“We knew we had to raise our game and that’s exactly what we did.
“I think it wasn’t just a team performance it was a squad performance, all the players that came on were fantastic. We had to grind the result out in the second half but it worked.
“We’ve tried to forget last season with everything that happened, it was disappointing and we’ve all moved on from that, we just want to win every game now.”
Belles travel to Durham on Sunday for their next Continental Cup clash.
