United are champions

MICK Russon scored a hat trick as Denaby United emphatically clinched the Doncaster Senior League Division One title with a 7-2 mauling of Ackworth United.

Paul Noonan’s side have been in the upper reaches of the division since emerging from the ashes last summer and finally sealed the championship.

Russon opened the scoring after ten minutes with a chip over the Ackworth keeper.

Russon netted again after cutting in from the right with Steve Ellor bagging a brace before the break.

Ackworth emerged determined for the second half and were rewarded with a goal from top scorer Steve Winder.

But they could not stop the Denaby party with substitutes Enzo Gaurini and Ainsley Finney adding to the score.

Winder pulled another goal back but Russon completed his hat trick.

The result meant the following clash with Highfields side The Highwayman turned into a title celebration which United duly won 5-3.

Ellor started the party by drilling home Andrew Wood’s through ball after 20 minutes.

Russon headed in a second from Ryan Oakley’s corner while Ellor tapped into an empty net to make it three before the break.

Highwayman pulled a goal back through Higgins after half time before Ellor completed his hat trick.

Bockarie reduced the deficit again for Highwayman but Ellor opened it back up with his 21st goal from eight games.

The last say went to Bockarie who drilled home from 30 yards past Thomas Chadburn.

But the day, and the season, belonged to Denaby.
