Moorends Stingers also emerged victorious in the under 15 competition, while Harworth Colliery took the honours in the under 11s.

More than 100 teams took part in eight age groups over two days at Epworth Showground.

Organiser Alan Duning was left in no doubt about the youngsters’ enthusiasm for summer football.

He said: “The response was huge, with 102 teams from all over South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire taking part.

“There was a great atmosphere.

“Saturday was brilliant because whole families had come to watch seven-and eight-year-olds come to play in their first ever tournament. It was brilliant.”

Tournament winners: U9 Messingham Colts, U10 Bessacarr FC, U11 Harworth Colliery, U12 Epworth Town, U13 Mexborough, U14 Barton Juniors, U15 Moorends Stingers.
