Double gold for rising athlete

HEPTAHLETE Liam Ramsay moved a step closer to a Great Britain call-up by winning gold at the U20 Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.

The 18-year-old from Edlington led from the outset of the heptathlon event - prevailing in all but the pole vault and shot putt competitions - to leave his rivals behind.

Ramsay claimed a points tally of 5,290 for an emphatic victory, 288 points ahead of nearest rival Jospeh Hutchinson of Team Bath, to also take the title of Northern champion and claim his second gold medal of the weekend.

The McAuley Catholic School sixth former is now ranked as the number one heptahtlete in the country at under 20 level and the teenager is focussing on qualifying for the European Junior Championships in Estonia in July.
