Miller: So far, so good

COACH Tony Miller is satisfied with the Dons’ pre-season form but inists there is still plenty of room for improvement.
A Doncaster Select side made up of amateurs from Toll Bar, Bentley Good Companions and Moorends-Thorne Marauders made life difficult for the Dons in their final warm-up game before Miller’s men eventually ran-out 50-4 winners at Wheatley Hills RUFC.
And Miller expects his revamped squad to get stronger as they build-up to the start of a vital season in Co-operative Championship One.
Miller said: “There’s a real spirit among the team and we’re looking pretty good.
“We’ve given a good account of ourselves in the friendlies with Hunslet and Sheffield and again on Sunday we did a lot of good things.
“I thought our defensive game was very solid.
“But there are some things we need to work on - we need to improve our ball control.
“I’m a big fan of the game against the amateurs and it’s an opportunity for local lads to try and impress and earn a contract with the Dons.
“Wheatley Hills were very accomodating and it was nice to play a game on the other side of town - there were a few old faces in the crowd watching us and hopefully they’ll be at the Keepmoat when the season gets going.
“The conditions weren’t ideal but it was the same for both sets of teams, and they’re conditions we’ll probably have to come up against again when we travel to places like Cumbria.
“All in all it was a worthwhile exercise and I’d like us to return to Wheatley next season.”
Sunday’s fixture doubled up as a testimonial for winger Dean Colton who got his name on the trysheet, along with Carl Hughes, Kyle Bibb, Mike Emmett and Craig Fawcett.
Tom Hodson also ran in a hat trick of tries as the Dons’ extra class and fitness shone through in a one-sided second half, after the amateurs restricted Doncaster to a 12-0 half time lead.
The Dons return to action on Sunday, February 12, when they travel to Gateshead Thunder in the Northern Rail Cup.
