Leigh power overcomes Dons

DONCASTER were brought down to earth with a bump as they were outmuscled by a strong Leigh Centurions outfit.

Tony Miller’s side had hoped to build on morale-boosting Championship wins over fellow promoted sides Barrow and Workington Town.

But Super League hopefuls Leigh were too hot to handle on a freezing Sunday afternoon at their plush Sports Village Stadium.

Doncaster went toe-to-toe with Leigh before the break and twice crossed the line before the hosts’ extra guile and power later came to the fore.

Dons broke the deadlock after just two minutes through winger Stewart Sanderson.

Simon Finnigan responded with two tries to nudge the home side ahead but Doncaster refused to be daunted and replied with another score of their own from Danny Cowling as Miller’s men showed good resistance and tenacity.

Following Cowling’s try on the half hour, however, Doncaster failed to add to their points tally as Leigh assumed control. Martyn Ridyard, who kicked four goals from four attempts, added a penalty just before the interval to put the Centurions 14-8 ahead.

And after the break it was one-way traffic as Finnigan completed his hat trick, before scores from Ryan Brierley, Jon Pownall and Sean Penkywicz gave the scoreline a more one-sided look.

n Sheffield Eagles squeezed their way to a second straight away win with a strong second half performance.

Down 24-10 at half-time Eagles forced their way back into the game and edged their way to the three points with prop forward Mitch Stringer’s second try 10 minutes from time. Stringer used his strength to hold off Town tacklers to force his way over. Brambani added the goal.
