A FAILED second half fight back saw the Dons slip to defeat against Championship side York in the Northern Rail Cup.
Tony Miller’s side were poor for the majority of the first half with the quick-footed visitors punishing several errors.
The Dons rallied after the break and threatened to turn the game on its head but luck was not on their side.
This was the case from the early stages and helped hand York the lead.
Dean Colton fumbled as he attempted to collect Ed Smith’s kick allowing James Ford to steal in and score with Chris Thorman landing the conversion.
The lead was doubled on 13 minutes after a sustained period of pressure from the visitors.
Thorman sent a short kick through and Jack Lee charged through a slow Dons defence to dot down with the former converting.
The Dons enjoyed their first foray into opposition territory but were caught with a suckerpunch on 22 minutes when Ford intercepted a pass and ran almost the full length of the pitch to score in the corner, Thorman converting.
Doncaster were starting to find their feet in the game and grabbed a deserved try back when an expansive move was finished by Liam Cunningham, Paul Cooke converting.
But slack defending cost the Dons again before the break as they were caught on the back foot when Tommy Haughey popped a quick pass to Rhys Clarke who ghosted through to score, Thorman converting.
And for good measure Thorman landed a drop goal just before the half time buzzer.
The Dons started the second half much better and were unlucky not to score when the bounce took the ball away from Dean Colton and Carl Hughes just before the line.
York grabbed probably the key try on 54 minutes with the Dons defence left standing again, Waine Pryce touching down.
Doncaster continued to push and were rewarded with another try when Cunningham produced a brilliant run from more than half way and went over, Cooke converting.
And with 12 minutes to go the Dons grabbed another try, Mick Butterfield spotting the gap to surge over with Cooke adding the conversion.
But they failed to add to their score as York killed the game effectively.
