Doncaster Knights 14 Moseley 3

KNIGHTS beat the weather - and a determined Moseley outfit - to move into a Championship play off spot.

The hard earned victory came at a cost, however, as back row Chris Planchant limped off with a serious knee injury.

Ground staff at Castle Park worked overtime to ensure Saturday's clash went ahead despite the freezing conditions.

And that hard work paid off as Lynn Howells' side recorded a crucial victory against the struggling Birmingham outfit - but missed out on a winning bonus point.

Tongan centre Hudson Tonga'uiha took just nine minutes to break the deadlock when he dove over following a five metre lineout and left Ali Warnock with a simple conversion.

Moseley skipper Neil Mason was sin-binned just before the half hour but that did not prevent them reducing the deficit thanks to a penalty from fly half Tristan Roberts.

The visitors were reduced to 13 men in first half stoppage time as both Gareth Taylor and lock Andy Hall were sent to the sin bin.

And Doncaster did not take long to make the most of their numerical advantage as Bryn Griffiths set up Andy Boyde to score just to the left of the posts in the opening minute of the second period.

Warnock added the extras but Doncaster failed to add to their tally despite their territorial advantage.

The home side's win was marred by a serious knee injury to Planchant who could now face several months on the sidelines - just weeks after recovering from a similar injury.

Knights: Carter, Wright, Armitage, Tonga'uiha, Briers (McColl 65), Warnock, Hallam, Davies (Corsar 70), Boden (Lawrie 70), Ta'u (Cusack 40), Townson, Griffiths, Boyde, Planchant (Cochrane 52), Grainger. Subs not used: D'Arcy, Kenworthy.
