The 33-year-old rolled back the years on Tuesday night when he featured in Rovers’ 4-0 friendly win at Rossington Main.

Rovers have been keen to stress that their former midfielder is currently just training with them, and nothing more, following his release from Rotherham United.

However, speaking to the Free Press, Ferguson admitted that Green - who made 277 appearances for Rovers as the club rose from the Conference to the Championship - has given him plenty of food for thought.

“He’s definitely one to consider,” said Ferguson.

“I’m not ruling it out, but I’m not saying it’s definite. He’s only training with us at the moment.

“I have to make sure it’s the right decision, not in terms of the type of lad he is or the quality he’s got, but if he fits into it numbers-wise in terms of positional areas on the pitch.

“If we did do it, it might be a slightly different Paul Green to what we’ve seen before in terms of where he would play.

“His game has slightly changed. Greeny’s always been a bit of a runner, he runs from deep and gets goals.

“He could still do that but on Tuesday he sat in front of the back four and he’s a good player - everyone knows that.

“He’s got a great attitude and I’ve enjoyed working with him, so we’ll see.

“He’s a fans’ favourite,” added Ferguson.

“He’s definitely given me a lot to think about.

“The average age of the squad has gone down quite a bit but when you get senior pros like him and Coppinger and Butler, you can’t have enough of them.”

Ferguson has already bolstered his midfield resources this week by re-signing Aston Villa’s Riccardo Calder on loan until January.
