Paul Dickov makes no bones about exactly what is expected of him and Doncaster Rovers this season - promotion at the first attempt.

Co-chairman-in-waiting John Ryan has made no secret of his ambition of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking.

And Dickov says he is under no illusion about the task in hand.

“I’ve said all along the most pressure I have, is the pressure I put on myself to succeed,” said Dickov.

“The club’s objective next season is to go straight back up.

“We’ll be in a group of about seven or eight teams who will have the same aim, and similar budgets.

“I want to succeed,” he added.

“I don’t ever want to have that feeling that I had at the end of last season at Leicester. The only way I can describe that feeling is ‘disgusting’.”

Dickov has plenty of recruitment work still to do ahead of Rovers’ League One opener at Yeovil on August 9.

But the Scot says his job over the next few weeks will also be to install a winning mentality among his squad, several of whom have experience of winning League One with Doncaster in 2013.

Dickov said: “The one thing we’ve got to have next season - as a staff, a club and especially as a group of players - is a winning mentality.

“We need to kick on [from last season]. We’ve spoken about it as a group already. We’ve spoken about having a winning mentality.

“As much as I wanted to win every game last season - because it’s in my nature - that was going to be impossible.

“Now, looking forward to this year, we want a group of players whose mentality is if they draw a game, then that’s not good enough.

“It’s going to happen, and we are going to lose games.

“But that mentality starts now. It starts in training, in pre-season games and we carry that all the way through the season.

“The group I’ve players I’ve got here are committed and they’re driven to going straight back up. Those are the type of players I want here.”

Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s takeover is expected to be formally completed tomorrow. The deal is still subject to Football League approval.
