Doncaster Rovers transfer latest: McKay hoping to do a deal with Diarra

Doncaster Rovers have targeted Mali international Mahamadou Diarra for their latest signing.

Doncaster Rovers have targeted Mali international Mahamadou Diarra for their latest signing.

DEAN Saunders has played down Doncaster’s attempts to sign ex-Real Madrid star Mahamadou Diarra - but the Free Press understands Rovers ARE working on a possible deal.

Saunders told RoversPlayer yesterday that he personally had not spoken to the 30-year-old midfield enforcer.

But Free Press sources have told us that Doncaster are doing everything possible behind-the-scenes to make what would seem like an unlikely deal become reality.

Agent Willie McKay, now working with Rovers, is also thought to be considering hiring a private jet to fly to Monaco and talk to Diarra.

The believability of Mali’s captain moving to the Keepmoat Stadium is not helped by today’s ludicrous tabloid speculation linking Rovers with Manchester City outcast Carlos Tevez.

But the Free Press understands there is a 50/50 chance that Doncaster could persuade Diarra to sign a short-term contract.

Diarra, a free agent after being released by French giants AS Monaco, wants to play in the Premier League and may be tempted to join Rovers until January - and hope to catch the eye of Premier League scouts.

It would be an agreement that would suit both parties, after Saunders revealed this week that he has no qualms about bringing in players on short term contracts.

And it would be a quite incredible coup for the Championship strugglers, given that Diarra cost Real Madrid £22million just five years ago.
