SUNNYFIELDS Primary School narrowly missed out on a trip to Headingley in the Drax Cup - losing out to Wickersley Northfield in the South Yorkshire final.

The Scawthorpe school topped their preliminary group by beating Sheffield’s Marlcliffe Primary School and Barnsley’s Shawlands Primary.

A ten run defeat to Thornhill Primary, of Rotherham, could not prevent Sunnyfields lining up in the last four, where they defeated Barnsley’s High View by 22 runs to set up a final with Northfield.

The Doncaster youngsters, however, just missed out on the chance to grace the home of Yorkshire CCC as they suffered a narrow defeat at Barnsley CC.

Castle Hills Primary School, of Scawthorpe, also reached the regional final at Barnsley but were unable to progress any further.

Wickersley Northfield joined English Martyrs’ RC Primary School (York), Alwoodley Primary School (Leeds) and Snaith Primary School (Goole) in Sunday’s final, prior to Yorkshire’s Twenty20 Cup match with Nottinghamshire.

The Drax Cup is the biggest cricket competition for Under 9s in the country.
