Cornish Pirates 30 Doncaster Knights 14

KNIGHTS' hopes of making a winning start to the new RFU Championship season were hijacked by the Pirates.

Lynn Howells' men were slow out of the blocks at Mennaye Field and found themselves with a mountain to climb at 20-0 down at half time.

A Rob Cook penalty and a close range Phil Burgess try - converted by Cook - gave a pumped up home side a ten point advantage after just ten minutes.

And it got worse for the lacklustre Knights when Gavin Cattle forced his way over the line before Alan Pavior touched down for the rampant Pirates.

Speedy winger Matty Williams scored two tries for Doncaster - both converted by Tristan Roberts - either side of another Cook penalty as the Knights finally found some attacking impetus after the break.

But Johnny Bentley had the final say when he scored the try of the game, with Cook adding the extras, to condemn Howells' side to a disappointing opening day defeat.
