Briggs’ GB dream
CYCLIST Graham Briggs is hoping his epic riding tour in Australia for Team GB will have impressed the national team coaches enough to consider him for re-selection.
The 29-year-old Team Raleigh-GAC race ace endured sweltering temperatures of up to 47 degrees as he competed in Victoria’s three-day Bay Criteriums and the Herald Sun Tour for the British outfit.
Rossington’s reigning British number one road racer and Elite Circuit Series champion finished fifth overall in the criteriums - his specialism - the only one from his team to finish in the top ten.
He was also one of only three of the six-man team to compete in the final stage of the gruelling Sun Tour following a trio of retirements for Team GB.
Speaking hours before boarding a plane to Majorca for a Team Raleigh trip, Briggs told the Free Press he hoped his consistent performances would have made a good impression on the national coaches - having last worn the jersey ten years ago.
“The Australia tour went better than expected, so I was very happy with my performance,” he said.
“Coming fifth overall after finishing fourth, seventh and tenth was a good result for me. I enjoyed the town centre races because they’re my speciality really.
“It was a massive challenge. I was competing in 90-mile races which were difficult and at one stage I was riding in 47 degrees so that was a massive shock to the system.
“After getting through that one, the next day was 10 degrees cooler so was much better.
“It was nice to be part of the team again. I’m glad my results were good because there is a little added pressure when you know you’re representing Team GB.
“I have hopefully done enough to get reselected for the side, you never know with these things but I was definitely happy with how things went in Australia.”
The Rossington Wheelers club member was last week named in Team Raleigh’s 14-man professional racing squad and is currently involved in their 10-day winter training camp in Spain.
Briggs is also gearing up to compete in early season races in France which begin late February.
