WITH merger talks between the two clubs set to be settled next month this match provided the Rovers youngsters with a chance to show just what they can bring to the deal.

Although honours remained even at the end of the match the point gained means that Rovers have clinched the Under 16s league championship.

Rovers had beaten the young Belles earlier in the season and were keen to record a double in front of over 150 fans at Hall Cross.

But the Belles pressed them hard throughout and it needed some outstanding saves from England junior keeper Julie Key to keep them at bay.

Rovers showed their mettle when Gemma Harte fired them in front from close range in the 25th minute.

Laura Slasor and Debi Grey were superb in defence when Belles tried to hit back but the visitors' determination paid off in the 68th minute with a good finish from inside the area from Sam Newton.

* The timetable for the merger starts on April 3 with meetings between representatives of both clubs who will each then hold extraordinary general meetings five days later.

Members will be entitled to vote on the proposals at both meetings and representatives of the clubs will then meet on April 10 to discuss the outcome.

* The Belles first team were without a fixture last weekend but travel to Tranmere on Sunday in the semi-final of the AXA FA Women's Cup.

Rovers Ladies were also without a game after their opponents Morley failed to raise a team.
