FOR a person who is no comic book fan and has never experienced The Hulk story before, the only draw for this film was the presence of Fight Club/ American History X actor Ed Norton.
Used to playing the underdog in many a cult film, this is Norton's first blockbuster Hollywood role - however he's still playing the familiar tortured genius role he is associated with.

The film starts with a whirlwind chase as Norton, aka Bruce Banner, is followed through the streets when a sample of his blood escapes from a factory he's working at. Right now, we're in Mexico as our hero has been forced to leave the good old US of A due to the Army wanting to make the 'hulk' disease into a weapon. And as Banner lives in his little bedsit, we see him slowly caress a photo of the lovely Liv Tyler who he left to escape his fate....

It's all very traditional Hollywood and if you're looking for something a little different from the usual summer blockbuster I wouldn't suggest setting eyes on the green monster. However, The Incredible Hulk is an enjoyable watch. Banner is a strong character and the special effects remain one of the stand out moments of the film. The Hulk is portrayed as a huge figure who is capable of even hurting the ones he loves. It's a typical King Kong and Jane story with some science cut in to make it more believable. Tim Roth is also not completely convincing as the English bad guy with him looking too weak to cause any damage in most scenes. However as the film progresses, Roth becomes a slimy character as he weaves himself into the plotlines, closely backed by William Hurt who makes capturing The Hulk his life's work with a few hard stares and sharp demands.

Ultimately, The Incredible Hulk does a brilliant job of hooking you in from the moment it begins. Those looking for a summer blockbuster will be happy to know it covers all the familiar ground and it's not too hard on the kids. However if you're a hulk comic fan, chances are this isn't going to leave you wanting more.
