An 87-year-old Doncaster man committed suicide after becoming concerned about world news events, his inquest heard.

Retired police officer Ronald Butterfield was found hanged at home in Braithwell Walk, Denaby Main, by his son.

The inquest heard Mr Butterfield, who was prone to mood swings and was on anti -depressants, would watch TV news all the time and became very troubled by events taking place across the world.

Giving evidence, his son Richard said: “He was concerned over world events. He was particularly worried about the Afghanistan situation.

“He used to think the worst of things were going to happen and was troubled about world events.”

The court heard Mr Butterfield had been having trouble sleeping and recurring hallucinations in the months before his death.

A number of notes written by the widower were also found in the property.

His son said: “We are all so proud of him.

“He was a special person and we all love him very much.”

Assistant coroner Mark Beresford concluded Mr Butterfield committed suicide.
