A MOVE is underway to bring the Olympic torch through Edenthorpe as part of its UK tour in June.
The torch is coming to Doncaster on day 39 of its trip through the country, on June 26, and will pass through Dunsville, Hatfield and nearby Armthorpe.
Residents are campaigning for a detour to be made into Edenthorpe following the visit to Armthorpe.
Parish council chairman John Howard said: “We have written a request to the organisers asking that the torch comes to the village. It’s going down the West Moor link road on its way between Armthorpe and Dunsville, so a detour into Edenthorpe would literally take a couple of minutes.
“We’ve got three schools in the village and this slight detour would give around 2,000 kids the chance to see it and take part in what will be an absolutely memorable experience.”
Alison Navas, headteacher at Canon Popham School, has given her backing to the plan.
She said: “I support this idea absolutely – this would be a very special for our children, something that could very well be a once in a lifetime event. I’d love to see this small diversion, so as many children as possible can take part in this wonderful event.”
