VIDEO: South Yorkshire runners put in a marathon effort in London

Runners from across South Yorkshire did a champion job of representing the region in the London Marathon.

People donned their running shoes to complete the 26.2-mile feat alongside the professionals.

Among them was 30-year-old Mike Delap, of Walkley, who raised more than £1,000 for Adoption Matters.

Mike, who completed the event in four hours and 42 minutes, said: “It was a good experience and I got everything out of it that I wanted.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere.”

Mike, of Walkley, Sheffield, who was inspired to raise money for the adoption charity because he was adopted as a young baby, said: “I was chuffed with my original target of £500, so reaching £1,000 it was amazing.”

Hannah Gilman, of Endcliffe, Sheffield, finished in three hours and 21 minutes. The 39-year-old, a brand manager for Voluntary Service Overseas, said: “It was cold first thing in the morning so everyone was feeling sorry for themselves, but there were people all the way along the course and it was brilliant.”

Hannah’s achievement is even more impressive because she was working in the VSO office in Myanmar during her training last month.

She said: “It was 40C,so training was put on the back foot for a while and I went out at 5am.”

NSPCC fundraiser Richard Hayes, from Deepcar, Sheffield, finished in three hours and eight minutes, while Sheffield Running Club’s Rob Jones finished in three hours and 21 minutes.

A number of well-known faces also took part, including Doncaster-born motorcycle racer turned singer James Toseland, who finished in three hours and 10 minutes and raised money for CLIC Sargent.

Dan Jarvis, who is defending his Barnsley Central parliamentary seat at next week’s general election, finished in three hours and 45 minutes. raising money for Cancer Research UK.
