Hundreds of mourners turned out in Epworth, to attend the funeral of young mother Anna Verrico.
Despite intermittent wind and rain, a huge crowd gathered silently in Epworth cemetery for the committal of the courageous young woman, whose life was cut tragically short by cancer.
And just prior to that, the town was silent as the funeral cortege passed through. Traders and businesspeople left their premises to stand on pavements as the cars passed by.
The 10.30am committal, then a midday memorial service at Glanford Park, Scunthorpe, were conducted by Anthony Smith, who was Anna’s husband Paul’s best man at their wedding in June 1996.
Anna was a Scunthorpe United fan and the club will mark her passing with a minute’s applause before their home game against Torquay this weekend.
Those who attended at Epworth cemetery spoke of an “emotional and thoughtful” service, in which Paul Verrico also managed to take part.
There will be full coverage of the funeral in next week’s Epworth Bells.
