VIDEO: Hollywood star Tom Cruise’s helicopter comes to Doncaster

Waiting for Video...

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise.

For there’s every chance you’ll stumble across helicopters, rocket launchers, tanks and all sorts of other military hardware as used by Hollywood legend Tom Cruise if you take a visit to Bawtry Paintball Fields.

And that’s because the popular 400 acre visitor attraction - which was recently voted among the world’s top 10 paintball sites - has taken delivery of a huge shipment of ex-Forces gear, including three Lynx helicopters to help bring even more fun and excitement to players of the popular outdoor pastime.

And eagle-eyed movie fans might recognise some of the new additions to the site - for much of the kit was used in Tom Cruise’s latest summer blockbuster Edge Of Tomorrow, a military sci-fi film which was filmed at Warner Bros’s UK studios and has just hit cinema screens.

Site director Karl Broadbent said: “All this stuff would have ended up on the scrapheap if it wasn’t for us.

“It all makes for a brilliant setting for our players to have even more fun in a realistic setting. The Lynx was used by Tom Cruise in his latest film, and we’ve pretty much brought it straight from the set to bring it up here.”

The helicopters and dozens of ammuniton boxes will be scattered around the huge forest, just off the Great North Road, over the coming days after a huge logistics operation to bring the gear to Doncaster.

“It was a bit of a nightmare to be honest. Once stuff has been decommissioned, it was basically our job to get it up here.

“It was difficult moving some of the stuff into place and we’ve had a few headaches, but it will all be worth it to help keep us as the best paintball site in Europe.”

But the cost of installing a new theatre of war for gameplayers doesn’t come cheap.

Karl said: “We’ve spent thousands to bring in all the new gear - a brand new Lynx costs £64 million and, while we haven’t spent anything like that, it was still a fair amount!”

Doncaster One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is among recent visitors to the site ranked sixth among 1,000 Yorkshire attractions on Trip Advisor.
