VIDEO: Emergency services day proposed in Mexborough

An emergency services information day is set to be held in Mexborough in the new year.

Traders are behind a plan to hold the awareness day in the High Street and markets area in the spring or summertime.

The event would see emergency services, such as firefighters, police and ambulance staff, converge in the town for a range of demonstrations, information stalls and advice sessions.

Stallholder Phil Toone, 60, of Barnsley, is a trained community first responder for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and is trying to get the scheme off the ground.

He said: “I’ve made initial approaches to a few organisations and they are behind it. The air ambulance is certainly interested in it.

“The idea would be to have representatives of the fire service, police, ambulance and air ambulance here along with any other organisation that would benefit to advise people about safety matters.

“It would be a great event I’m sure and would increase footfall into the town, while also getting across that important safety message.”

He added that the event would be based on a similar 999 awareness day held in Barnsley in May this year.

The day saw a whole host of emergency services in attendance with such things as chip pan fire demonstrations and a rescue at the scene of a mock car crash.

Said Phil: “The one in Barnsley went down really well. If we can do something similar that would be great.

“I can also show people how to use the defibrillator machine we have in the indoor market. I hope we can be in a stage to hold it sometime in June or July. There’s a lot of groundwork to be done first.”
