Work has got underway on plans to redevelop Doncaster Market.
Diggers and workmen have begun ripping up stalls and concrete in the area between the Wool Market and the Corn Exchange with the area fenced off to the public while the work is carried out.
Artists’ impressions have already been released revealing planned designs for the outdoor market and a public square area outside the Corn Exchange.
The £1 million plans are aimed at regenerating the town centre and creating potentially hundreds of jobs.
Proposals for the new market include modern stalls and improved sight lines with a ‘grid’ structure similar to aisles in a supermarket.
The proposed new layout should improve access to the Wool Market and also enable the creation of a public square in front of the Corn Exchange featuring attractive paving, new benches and street lighting.
The project is due to be completed by the autumn.
