A warning not to drink tap water unless it is boiled will REMAIN in place in parts of South Yorkshire until at least Thursday.

Yorkshire Water has issued an update on the bacteria contamination in the water supply which has left 3,600 households relying on boiling water before drinking - or turning to bottled supplies.

The alarm was raised on Friday when Yorkshire Water issued a Do Not Drink notice to residents in DN8 postcodes in Doncaster, affecting Thorne, Moorends and Sandtoft.

Today, the company has revealed that it is ‘making good progress’ on improving the water - but it says the boil water notice will stay until at least Thursday.

Charlie Haysom, the company’s Director of Service Delivery, said: “Our number one priority is our customers health and safety and this is why the boil order notice in Thorne is remaining in place until at least

Thursday.

“This assessment is supported by Public Health England who we have been closely consulting with. We’ve updated our website to show a full list of postcode areas for the residents who still need to boil their water

before using for cooking or drinking.

“We are encouraged that sample results are improving, but we need them to be completely clear before we can lift the boil order notice. Once again, we would like to thank local residents for their ongoing patience and we

hope the £30 goodwill gesture payment we announced yesterday will help deal with this frustrating and inconvenient situation.

“We’re making good progress with our investigations into the cause of the incident and these continue to focus on the Coulman Industrial Estate as a potential source of the problem.”

The firm added that some water may become discoloured as chlorine is being used to flush the water of bacteria.

It added that some bogus callers have been ringing customers to tell them the Boil First notice has been lifted - but it has not.

Those affected have been offered a £30 payment as a ‘gesture of goodwill’.
