A “TRUE gentleman” who helped kit out generations of walkers and outdoor enthusiasts at one of Doncaster’s longest established family firms has died.

Sports fanatic John Brooke, who ran the JW Brooke and Sons countrywear store in Doncaster Market Place for 60 years has died at the age of 80 after a short illness.

The shop, which celebrates its 125th anniversary next year, is renowned for its traditional customer service with Mr Brooke almost a permanent fixture behind the counter - despite officially retiring 15 years ago.

Daughter Alison Goodman, who now runs the shop with husband Peter, said: “Dad was a true gentleman - the kind of man who would doff his cap to people he saw and knew.

“He was a quiet man but had a wonderful sense of humour and was always so interested in people and going the extra mile for his customers.”

A private family committal will take place at Rose Hill on November 20 followed by a service open to all at Priory Place Methodist Church from 2pm with donations to the Samaritans.
