Long tailbacks on M18 near Doncaster after car fire

Traffic has been stopped on the M18 northbound near Doncaster this afternoon because of a car fire.

But officials have now said that traffic is flowing again, with delays of 30 minutes and congestion stretching back nearly three miles.

At 4.50pm, Highways England said fire crews had now put the fire out on the M18 northbound between J1 (Rotherham) to J2 (A1M)

and all closures have now been lifted.

But they said there were delays of up to 30 minutes on the M18 northbound between the two junction, and approximately 2.7 miles of congestion.

Highways England had stated at at 4.15pm that their traffic officers and firefighters were on the scene.

The said on Twitter at that point: “The M18 northbound J1 (Rotherham) to J2 (A1M) traffic has been temporarily STOPPED due to a car fire. Traffic Officers

and SYRF (South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue) are currently at the scene. Congestion building on the approach.”
