A Doncaster bus driver, known for his welcoming manner, has been nominated for a prestigious national award.
First bus driver Malcolm Burton, who has been serving Doncaster’s commuters since 2001, has been nominated for top national bus driver at the UK bus awards 2014.
The 60-year-old is one of the driving team for First in Doncaster and is amongst a group of eight up for the title of Top National Bus Driver.
He has been described as someone that is ‘valued as a superb driver who is well liked by colleagues and customers and who goes about his job in an unassuming manner’.
Andy Simpson, business manager for First in Doncaster said: “This is fantastic news for Malcolm and all the team at First.”
“He is a fantastic employee and always works hard to meet customer’s needs as well as being very well respected by his colleagues.”
In his nomination Malcolm, of Cantley, was also praised for the way in which he makes his customers feel welcome, in particular those who have difficulties whether and they have sight problems, are disabled or are trying to manoeuvre a pushchair onto the bus.
Malcolm has also received regular commendations from customers for his care, patience and friendliness, not least for waiting for elderly passengers to board the bus.
He is one of 10 people working in the bus industry across Yorkshire to be nominated.
Tony Depledge OBE, chairman of the UK Bus Awards, praised the calibre and variety of the finalists’ entries. “Yet again, this year’s entries embody the vibrant and creative spirit showcased by the UK Bus Awards Scheme and I’m delighted we have another year of strong competition,” he commented.
He added: “The judges have selected a superb range of entries for the final stages of the contest, where rising passenger numbers and satisfaction and ever-imaginative marketing initiatives, focused on listening to customers, have shone out.
“Each and every finalist has winning qualities and I wish them all every success at this year’s ceremony in November,” he added.”
The winners are due to be announced at a glitzy awards ceremony at the London Hilton hotel on November 18.
