A couple feel lucky to be alive after a car crashed into their Doncaster driveway minutes before they arrived home.

Grandparents Robert and Jackie Jarvis had been out with their grandchildren, aged two and four, when they returned to Stoops Lane, Bessacarr, to find emergency services outside their home.

Their BMW, which they had left parked in their driveway, was in their neighbours’ garden after being hit by another car which had come to a standstill in front of their house.

Mrs Jarvis, aged 66, said: “We got home at about 4.30pm to find the road was closed off in both directions.

“We could see two police cars, two ambulances and two fire engines, we didn’t realise at first they were right outside our house.

“We parked nearby and walked home. We saw the BMW in next door’s garden and a policeman in ours.

“If we’d been home a few minutes earlier we’d have been in the driveway getting the girls out of the car.

“It looks as though the car hit the kerb and then our car – we would have had a car coming towards us and would have had only had moments to jump out of the way.

“If it had happened any earlier there would also have been schoolchildren walking home.”

Mr Jarvis, aged 64, said: “It is a miracle nobody died. We do not know what happened to the lady who was driving or the man who was in the car with her. They had been taken to hospital by the time we arrived, but I hope they are okay.

“The neighbours only moved in about a week ago.

“He said he heard the bang when the crash happened and came outside.

“He had been unloading boxes and had gone back inside for more. His children were inside too. This could have been a lot worse.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services were called following reports of a collision in Stoops Lane. It is believed a silver Fiat Bravo and a grey BMW 5 series were involved. No-one is reported to have sustained significant injuries.”
