For many comedians it's hard to follow an award winning show with something that is going to cause mass hilarity for established fans.
For Tim Minchin some may say the task is even harder following the success of musical comedians The Mighty Boosh and Flight Of The Conchords. Forever compared to the likes of Bill Bailey there is something more immediate, and less PC about Minchin's latest show- Ready For This. After all as Minchin bounds on stage in a flurry of strobe lights and booming bass he first launches into a up tempo piano melody about ginger hair.
This show unlike So Rock also covers religion more extensively than welcome. A jolly anthem on "the good book" provides a sing-a-long but little else, yet it's when Minchin is being truly cruel his comedy shines. A song directed to a journalist who gave Minchin a bad review is a particular highlight as Minchin sings "Ding dang, ding, dang, dong, this is my Phil Daoust song" complimented with images of the critic's life taking a downward turn. We are also treated to highlights from the comedians previous shows with 'Canvas Bags' and 'Darkside' slotting perfectly with new material- however the stand out moment of the night is a nod towards animal cruelty with 'Bears Don't Dig On Dancing'. As a poor sod on the front row is forced into a bear costume the song is a great moment, showing whether it be rap, poetry, dance or ballad, Tim Minchin can do them all.
