We are told that there are targets for gold medals to be won by the athletes of Great Britain.

We might therefore remember it either for its success, or for its failures.

There was a time when only amateurs could enter, but now many of the athletes are highly rewarded men and women.

Amateurs traditionally played a sport simply for the love of it (amateur being derived from the word to love).

Professionals played for the reward.

There is still used a church notice that states “In tennis love means nothing, but in Christ love means everything.”

Unfortunately in tennis love does mean no score, nothing, but often in our lives we celebrate our best in faith and family, hope and trying.

In that we know that love does mean everything- an din the best sense of the word we are amateurs.
