DOWNTON Abbey star Thomas Howes took a break from filming to support a service which offers help to people with mental health issues.

Woodlands-born Thomas, who plays second footman William in the hit ITV1 period drama, dropped into the shop in Hall Gate which was celebrating its first birthday.

To mark the event, the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust-run shop had advice and information on services it provides for residents with mental health concerns.

The milestone also marked an awareness event which was celebrated on a global scale called World Mental Health Day.

Thomas, who helped found Doncaster’s 2Act Theatre Company with artistic director Simon Carr in 2006, has family members involved in mental health support work.
