Scenes for hit drama This Is England have been filmed in a Dearne working men’s club.

Stars of the Channel 4 show gathered at the Ivanhoe Working Men’s Club in Ivanhoe Road, Conisbrough, to shoot for This Is England 90 - the final instalment of the Bafta award-winning series.

A committee member, who did not want to be named, exclusively revealed details of the visit to the South Yorkshire Times this week.

She said: “TV crews were here for two full days filming. They said they were looking for a traditional-looking working men’s club and we were all really excited they used ours.

“I watch the programme - quite a few of us do - and it’s a really great, gritty drama. We’re looking forward to seeing scenes that they filmed here on TV.”

She added she was not sure if lead actor Thomas Turgoose and director Shane Meadows attended as staff had been asked by producers to keep tight-lipped about the filming process to not give away any details about the story line.

The club was closed during filming on Friday and Saturday, February 13 and 14. There were reports the production crew had offered to make a donation towards refurbishing the club as a thank you, but the committee member said this was not true.

She added: “They closed the club for filming and we weren’t allowed in. We didn’t mind though because it’s nice to be involved in a big programme like that. You wouldn’t have ever expected it.”

The show is being filmed by Sheffield-based production company Warp Films. The South Yorkshire Times contacted the company but nobody was available for comment as we went to press.

The series will be set in 1990, with Gazza’s tears at the Italia 90 World Cup and the rave culture providing the backdrop.

It will follow the main characters including Lol, Woody, Shaun, Milky and Smell as they negotiate their way through adulthood in the 1980s and early 90s.

The show will pick up from the events of two previous series set in 1988 and 1986, which are the TV series spin-offs from the hit film of the same name which was released in 2006.

Scenes have also been filmed in Sheffield.

Cast member Andrew Shim, who plays Milky, posted on social media site Twitter: “This has been the most insane week of my life! Wrapping on This Is England 90, best shoot any of the cast or crew have ever done.

We will see an enormous transformation in the lives of our cast

Director Shane Meadows

“Love you all like family. Put our hearts and souls in to this and with the help and support of every member of the team, we went to some very dark places to make this as special as it can possibly be.”

In a previous press release about the forthcoming series, director Shane Meadows said: “We will see an enormous transformation in the lives of our cast over these final four stories as Shaun writes his final chapter with the gang he loves.”

The series will feature four 60 minute episodes and is due to air on Channel 4 later this year.
