He may have another year to wait before being able to drive a car but 16-year-old Callum Burns has already flown a plane.
The fearless pilot has become one of the youngest to fly solo in the UK after making his maiden voyage on his birthday.
Callum, who has been learning his craft at Doncaster Sheffield Flying School based at Robin Hood Airport, now has his sights set on a career in aviation.
The teen, of Greenfield Lane, Balby, said: “It was really nerve wracking at first but when I got up there everything just dropped into place. I was up there about 20 minutes and it was amazing.
“I didn’t realise I was one of the youngest people to do it until afterwards, I felt really proud.
“All my friends and family thought it was really cool and they were proud of me.”
“I’ve wanted to be a commercial pilot since I was young and since I’ve been going to the flying school I’ve definitely caught the bug and I can’t wait to get back up there.”
The Balby Carr Community Sports College and Science College student is now planning to study maths and physics to help him pursue his dream career.
Christian Widdowson, chief flight instructor at Doncaster Sheffield Flying School based at Robin Hood Airport said Callum’s talent was obvious from the start.
He said: “Callum became the youngest solo pilot in the UK, as he flew on his own for the first time on his 16th birthday which is the youngest age permitted by law. We feel that this is a tremendous achievement for someone so young,
“Callum has only had 16 hours of training before completing the flight. He wants to become a commercial pilot so this is a great start. It was obvious from the start that Callum had real potential, he’s one of those people who is told something once and he can just do it.”
Based at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster Sheffield Flying School offers flight training, aircraft hire, and introductory flying lessons.
