SWINTON teenager Thomas De’Ath had a royal appointment last week when he picked up his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award from HRH Prince Philip.
The 19-year-old joined a group of 30 young achievers from around the UK to receive the award at St James’ Palace in London.
The modest youngster declined to have his picture taken this week, but his mum Claire said the family were very proud of him.
She said: “It was a great day and a proud moment for him because he put a lot of work into completing the award.”
Thomas, a former Swinton Communtiy School pupil, took over two-and-a-half years to finish the five sections of the award scheme.
His diverse activities included a two week expedition to India with other students from Swinton and Wath secondary schools.
The trip included a five day trek up the Himalayas to reach the viewpoint at Sandakphu, which is the highest peak in West Bengal at 3636 metres.
