DRUMS, donkeys and pack-ups were the highlights of a hugely successful Picnic in the Park event at Goldthorpe.

The rain held off just long enough for families from across the Dearne to get together and enjoy food and entertainment at the community event run by Barnsley Council, sponsored by Kier and with picnics packed by Cole Brothers’ Cafe at Wombwell. The first 500 kids to claim them got their lunch for free.

Samba drumming workshops were a new entertainment idea and were a massive hit with youngsters who queued to get involved.

Local councillors were there to chat to people, along with the many rides, stalls and games on offer.

Next year the event will be repeated, but will be taken over and run by the Dearne South Community Board.
