BARNSLEY Council and Berneslai Homes have marked the successful completion of five new build schemes, to create 76 new homes across Barnsley.
The new build homes were delivered under the Local Authority Challenge Fund programme as the result of Barnsley Council being awarded a grant of £4.8 million by the Homes and Communities Agency. This was match funded by the Council to give a total investment of £10 million in the five local authority new build schemes. This programme of development has delivered the first new Council homes in the Borough for 30 years
The five schemes include Bellbrooke Avenue, Darfield (15 units); and Lidget Lane, Thurnscoe (19 units) in the Dearne Valley. Each scheme has been tailored to meet the needs of local people from the council waiting lists and to contribute to the physical regeneration of these areas. All the homes have been built to high standards, including meeting level FOUR of the Code for Sustainable Homes which incorporates high levels of insulation, efficient heating systems and the use of renewable energy technologies.
The provision of jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities were also built into the requirements placed on contractors. In addition they engaged with local schools providing children with the opportunity to learn at close hand about how housing is built and how it contributes to the local community.
