A TALENTED martial arts youngster is bidding for glory on two fronts - the world championships and starring on the big screen.
Joe Sutherland, nine, is creating a huge name for himself on the martial arts circuit and is gearing up for October’s Kickboxing World Championships in Canada. He has also been talented scouted for a film.
The Hatfield youngster is already a four-time British National Champion in freestyle forms as well as being Yorkshire champion and the youngest member from the region to qualify for a place on the England team.
That type of talent has led to several governing bodies fighting to have the Hatfield Travis St Lawrence Primary School pupil on their team and Joe has been offered the chance to represent his country in two further World Championships this year.
His constant success has drawn the attention of scouts in the movie-making business who want Joe for a martial arts film due for release next year called The Law of One starring Winston Ellis of Pirates of the Caribbean and The Dark Knight fame.
The Armthorpe-based East West Mixed Martial Arts club member has been training in the sport since the tender age of five and was spotted by Kwoklyn Wan - the brother of television style guru Gok Wan - who saw his talent videos online and invited him to audition for the film.
Mr Ellis also called Joe directly after his audition asking to see the first degree black belt youngster again.
Proud mum Gemma Sutherland said: “He is extremely excited but he is quite level-headed and we are keeping his feet on the ground. His main ambition is to be recognised for his talent in martial arts and to help others who would like to get into the sport, he would love to be an ambassador for martial arts.”
