The beautiful game took on a Spanish flavour in the Dearne, when visitors from Murcia challenged Goldthorpe pupils to a friendly.
Thirteen young Spaniards stayed at Manvers and made the visit to the Dearne Advanced Learning Centre after failing to make a Penistone planned match due to snow.
Accompanied by former Dearne ALC pupil and now ‘el entrenador’ at Kings College, Murcia, Gary Whitaker, the Spanish side managed to beat the Dearne team of Y7 and Y8 players 3-1, despite having only ever played one full-side game previously.
Dearne teacher Mike Horsfield said: “Our team was a bit taken aback by the Spanish style of play, which was good standard with a lot of short passing.
“But it was a good exercise and we hope to make a return visit to Spain in May.”
The Spanish lads also managed to fit in tours of the Barnsley FC ground, Wembley and Old Trafford from their South Yorkshire base during their brief visit to England.
