South Yorkshire residents could be sitting on 'millions of pounds worth of jewellery' and not even know it.

That is according to auction house Bonhams who said the value of vintage jewellery has in value soared by more than 80 per cent in the last ten years.

The firm is now urging residents who find gems hidden away to arrange for a home visit valuation.

Simon Mitchell, jewellery specialist for Bonhams in the Yorkshire region, said: “Jewellery can often be left sitting in a jewellery box or in a safety deposit box with the owners unsure what to do with it so it remains untouched for years therefore we are actively encouraging customers to bring in pieces for a free and confidential valuation.”
