Doncaster’s top cops were honoured for their courage, dedication and service at a glitzy awards ceremony last night.

Scores of officers, support staff and representatives from partner agencies gathered for the Doncaster District Police Awards at the Keepmoat Stadium to recognise individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Awards were handed out across 13 categories and presented to the winners by South Yorkshire Police’s assistant chief constable Jo Byrne, police and crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings and Doncaster mayor Ros Jones.

Of the 13 awards, the investigation of the year award, sponsored by the Doncaster Free Press, went to ‘Operation Aboves’ - a lengthy and complex investigation into a series of armed robberies across Doncaster and Nottinghamshire in the summer of 2013.

The investigation resulted in nine people being sentenced to 36 years in prison in July last year.

Individual awards were given out recognising officers’ bravery, dedication over a career’s worth of service and for community engagement.

Pc Ian Sides took home the coveted police officer of the year award and was praised for his “dogged determination” to bring criminals to justice.

Meanwhile, Pc Jasmine Hall won the bravery award for making a difficult arrest in the face of hostility from a group of men.

Inspector Ray Mountford took home the lifetime achievement award after 30 years dedicated service.

District commander, chief superintendent Richard Tweed, said: “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to highlight and promote the work undertaken across the district by police officers and staff over the last year, and for those who win an award to be praised for their dedication and commitment to the job.”

Dr Billings added: “It was my pleasure to be invited to present some of the district awards and to hear about the dedicated work that is carried out in Doncaster. Police officers, PCSOs and staff, both in Doncaster and across South Yorkshire, work extremely hard and are committed to making our communities safer. These awards provide us with an opportunity to recognise their efforts and thank them for their commitment.”

Mayor Jones said: “The Safer and Stronger Doncaster Partnership, which sees the council work together with multiple partners including South Yorkshire Police, is committed to making Doncaster a safe place for everyone to enjoy.

“As part of this, our local police teams play a vital role working in partnership with council community teams to prevent and investigate crime and protect vulnerable people within our communities. I am delighted to see their hard work and bravery acknowledged.”

This was the third awards ceremony and was hosted by BBC Look North presenter Ian White. Sponsorship came from Doncaster-based businesses and organisations.
