A commitment to increasing competitive sport opportunities has won a Sheffield primary school a cash award.

Rivelin Primary School will receive £400 from Sainsbury’s School Games to support its school competition.

The award was made after pupils used their blogging skills to spread the news about all the different sporting activities they can get involved with, including sports day, cricket days, curling and cross country, to name a few.

The Sainsbury’s School Games is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England, and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust. It aims to provide opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country by encouraging them to take part in competitive school sport.

Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county or area level, and a national event for the most talented school age athletes.

To share good practice, schools are encouraged to blog about their competitive sport activities to show their impact on young pupils. This in turn can allow other schools, parents and the wider community to see first-hand what is on offer for their pupils.

Over the last year Rivelin has taken part in a range of competitive sporting opportunities. Staff spokeswoman Sheenagh Middleton said: “It was great to see so many children participating and enthused by the activities.”

Ali Oliver, Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Youth Sport Trust, said: ‘We would like to congratulate and thank Rivelin Primary School for the great job they are doing. At the Youth Sport Trust we recognise the value and importance of competitive school sport not only to drive physical activity levels, but also to develop young people’s life skills, character and resilience.

“There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates active young people do better in life.’ The Sainsbury’s School Games is supported by a range of partners.
