sheff concert season As the current 2011/2012 series draws to a close next month, details of the 2012-2013 Sheffield International Concert Season have now been announced.

The Hallé continue in their crucial role as orchestra in residence and season programmers, once again providing a thrilling line up of soloists, conductors and orchestras that showcases the very best of the classical world.

The 2012/13 series is also a particularly special one, as it coincides with the City Hall’s 80th Anniversary and The Halle’s special opening concert on Saturday 29 September 2012, includes a number of works that were part of the opening weekend’s concerts back in 1932. This concert will also feature a special guest performance from Lesley Garrett.

Meanwhile the rest of the 2012/13 season continues to look towards the future, offering a platform for young artists, from Britain and further afield, to showcase their award-winning talent, with appearances from conductors Andrew Gourlay and Rory Macdonald, as well as soloists Chloë Hanslip, Alban Gerhardt, Evgenia Rubinova and Valeriy Sokolov.

It is fitting, as they approach their own 80th birthday, that the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, intrinsically linked with City Hall since the 1930s, will join three different ensembles in the coming season. Firstly the Black Dyke Band for two performances of the traditional Christmas concert, then the Manchester Camerata and a cast of star-studded soloists for Handel’s Messiah and finally the Hallé with two fantastic singers, in a dramatic concert inspired by the sea.

The Hallé’s other appearances, always central to the season, are interspersed with performances from other notable UK orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, while this season’s true international offering will come from the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Priority booking is reserved for subscription bookers for the time being, but single tickets will go on General Sale from Friday 22 June 2012. In the meantime, the next concert to feature in the current season will see the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall on Friday 11 May 2012.
