A FREE concert for schoolchildren has proved an instant hit for youngsters – selling out in two hours.

The entertainingly titled Sir Scallywag and The Golden Underpants will take place on March 18 at Priory Place Methodist Church after 800 tickets were snapped up by youngsters from 12 local schools.

The show, by award-winning composer Paul Rissmann will introduce primary school children to a host of musical instruments and singing techniques.

Music in the Round, has partnered up with darts – Doncaster Community Arts – to present the interactive concert to Doncaster school children which will help them learn singing and basic music skills.

And with free participation pack, books and audio tracks for schools distributed in advance by Music in the Round, organisers say there will be no excuse not to join in the fun.

A performance for families will take place on 16 March 16 3pm. Tickets for the concert are priced at £8 and £6 concessions and can be bought in advance from the Doncaster Civic Theatre.

The show is a laugh-out-loud musical adventure written by Music in the Round’s children’s composer in residence and based on the book by Giles Andreae.

It tells the story of Sir Scallywag, the six-year-old hero who saves the royal underpants from an invading giant.

The story has benefits for language and literacy learning and Paul’s composition brings the themes, characters and narrative to life, using the same device that Prokofiev used with Peter and the Wolf.

It will be performed by Ensemble 360, with Polly Ives as narrator. Images from the book and words to the songs will be projected on two big screens.
