A SCHOOL was evacuated on Monday as fire swept through a classroom.
Firefighters were called to Wombwell High School on Roebuck Street at 1pm, as pupils vacated the building.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident, and pupils were praised by staff for the ‘quiet and orderly’ way in which they responded to the fire alarm.
The school opened as usual the next day, and a message was posted on the website saying: “It is vital all students return determined to work hard.”
A statement from the Head of the school, David Hudson, said of the incident: “It could have been a lot worse. It caused very little inconvenience and it is school as usual.”
The cause of the blaze, that was contained in one classroom, is still unverified.
