TEACHERS and pupils have pleaded with parents to avoid parking at their school gates over fears there could be a tragic accident.
A road safety campaign has been launched at Swinton Brookfield Primary School in a bid to stop parents from dropping off their kids directly outside the school entrance, which is causing a build up of traffic.
Kerry Moss, head of school, said: “Parents have been parking up on the zig zag lines and close to where the lollipop lady helps the children to cross the road.
“When cars are parked on either side of the road it makes it very difficult to get a clear view of the oncoming traffic.
“I am concerned that there could be a serious accident. We have launched the road safety campaign to try and act now before something happens.”
The school has now appointed four pupils, Ashleigh Davis, Daniel Kattab, Emily Gilliver and Alexis Banks, all aged 10 and 11, of Swinton, as road safety officers.
They have been leading a project, which has involved all teachers and pupils, to create banners urging parents to park in a safe area.
Under the slogan “Show you care, park elsewhere!”, the banners will be put up in prominent locations around the school for parents to see.
Further road safety activities, such as teaching students how to cross the road correctly, are planned at the school.
Mrs Moss, a mum-of-two, said: “The safety of our students is always paramount and our main concern.
“We would like parents to drop their children off at streets close to the school but not on the main road outside school gates.
“This will ease the congestion we get in the morning and make it safer for everyone.”
