RAIN definitely dampened play at a bumper gala event planned for Thurnscoe at the weekend.

But those who did turn out to enjoy the fun run and entertainment at Houghton Road playing fields still managed to have a great time - and the sun did eventually venture out from behind the clouds.

Organiser Ian Ball of the Gr8 M8s youth club management team, said: “Because of the poor weather, we were unsure whether or not to go ahead with the gala but decided not to let people down.

“A number of rides, and the invited donkeys failed to show on the day and the turnout wasn’t great, largely because the day started showery I think. By the time it turned warmer I imagine people had made other plans. But we had 20 or so youngsters who took part in the fun run and as far as we were concerned they were all winners. Each of them received a medal to take home.”

Junior volunteers camped out at the field where a marquee was erected in preparation the night before. Any prizes that were unused or unclaimed will be saved for future events.
